A car crashed into the front gates of Downing Street, the residence and office of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, on Thursday, prompting an immediate response from London police. One individual has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and criminal damage.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:20 PM when a small vehicle approached the gate at a low speed. Armed officers at the scene promptly apprehended the man.

“There are no reports of any injuries,” the police confirmed in a statement.

The vehicle was left abandoned outside the gate, with its doors and trunk open. Downing Street has declined to comment on the incident.

“Lots of children ran away and the police began pointing their guns at the person inside,” said Simon Parry, 44, who was protesting opposite Downing Street and saw the incident.

Following the crash, police established a cordon, temporarily halting traffic along Whitehall, a prominent road home to several governmental departments.

The incident comes at a time when Britain’s current terrorism threat level is deemed “substantial”, indicating that an attack is likely. Despite this, police have yet to clarify whether the event is related to any form of terrorism. The investigation remains ongoing.
