In this edition of Break the Fake, it is Russia’s Victory Day celebrations of May 9 that find themselves in the spotlight as well as Russian imperialist revelry oozing out from the form through which the event is organized. Why does Russia celebrate the end of WWII a day after the rest of the Allies? Because Stalin, like Russian leaders before him since time immemorial, cared little for the actual truth. He was in fact the guy making his own truth. The deliberate delay meant the Nazi leaders had to pretend they were surrendering the next day as well. Not to the Allies, mind you, but to Comrade Stalin himself.
