Putin’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine has dramatically deepened Russia’s structural demographic crisis, which has been worsening for years. Irreversible human losses are caused by both the number of frontline casualties and the number of severely wounded troops who are putting a severe strain on Russia’s population. Then there are large numbers of those who chose to flee abroad in order to avoid mobilization. What is the outlook on the Russian demographic situation and why the war may in fact be a symptom of Moscow’s demographic woes rather than their cause? TVP World prepared a report on the matter and invited Zygmunt Dzięciołowski, former editor-in-chief of OpenDemocracy Russia, to shed more light on the issue.
