Iga Świątek hailed “Champion of Champions” by renowned French daily

The French newspaper “L’Équipe” hailed Polish tennis player Iga Świątek as “Absolute Queen”, summing up the 2023 season. The newspaper’s journalists declared the 21-year-old athlete the sportswoman of the year for 2022 without any doubt, awarding her the title “Champion of Champions.”

In second place was Dutch cyclist Annemiek Van Vleuten, and in third place was Jamaican athlete Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

The survey of the world’s best athletes, conducted by journalists from the ‘L’Équipe’ group, has existed since 1975, but a separate classification for men and women was introduced in 2012.

Of the female tennis players in the past, the only “Champion of Champions” was Serena Williams. The American was honoured for the 2012, 2013 and 2015 seasons. “Świątek could follow in her footsteps, this particular season suggests so,” the newspaper assessed.

In her statement to the paper, the Polish athlete revealed her goals for the 2023 season.

I would like these successes not to hinder me, but to serve me in the best possible way. I hope not to focus on defending points, but I will want to do what is possible, as I did last year. It is not necessary to try to repeat, but to continue what I did,” said the world’s best female tennis player.

Another tennis player, Caroline Garcia, was voted the best French female athlete of the year. Both ladies featured on the cover photo of the Thursday issue of L’Équipe.
