Polish FM meets his Macedonian, Jordanian counterparts, OSCE head

Poland’s Foreign Minister and chairman of the OSCE, Zbigniew Rau, on Monday met with his North Macedonian and Jordanian counterparts – Bujar Osmani and Ajman Safadi, respectively, as well as the OSCE secretary-general, Helga Schmid.

The talks were related to the ongoing OSCE Mediterranean Conference in Jordan. Other bilateral meetings are also planned on the sidelines of the event.

Łukasz Jasina, spokesman for the Polish Foreign Ministry, told reporters that the conference is one of the most important events in the Mediterranean countries, stressing that the main agenda of the talks are multi-dimensional security issues.

There cannot be a safe and secure Europe without a stable and prosperous Mediterranean region. Our nations deserve to live in peace and dignity in a world ruled by international law and shared commitments. pic.twitter.com/Tqy2x9qSmp

He recalled that the Mediterranean Partnership is one of the two – along with the Asian one – formats of cooperation between the OSCE and countries that have developed a special relationship with it over the years.

In the case of the Mediterranean Partnership, it includes Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco, and Tunisia. The group’s work is led by North Macedonia, which will take over the OSCE Chairmanship from Poland in 2023.

“We are all involved to a greater or lesser extent in the conflicts that are taking place in this part of the world, and each country from this area also has its own opinion on the war in Ukraine, which has disrupted something for all of us – security for some, food supply chains for others,” Mr Jasina said.

“And these issues are being addressed today, as is the issue of confidence building. We have Egypt, Israel and Jordan here at the same table. This is proof that this is possible, and Poland is an important partner here with good relations with all these countries,” he added.

Asked which of the aspects discussed at the conference are the most important from the Polish point of view, the official pointed out that “first of all, we [Poland] have a lot of interests here when it comes to security in the Middle East.”

“We are talking about the refugee crisis, which happened a year ago and which can always come back… Poland is also very active when it comes to energy issues, and there is a huge resource of the world’s energy possibilities here, and Poland is also in contact with the countries present here on this issue,” he explained.

The spokesman also praised Polish diplomacy, calling it “a world format one”, pointing out the country’s ability to be an intermediary between different countries, “from Ukraine to Iran.”
