Ukraine to make joint bid to host World Cup 2030: UK daily

Ukraine will be part of Spain and Portugal’s joint campaign to host the international football tournament in 2030, according to The Times.

The move, which according to The Times has been sanctioned by Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the governments of Spain and Portugal, the war-torn country would host one of the groups in the tournament.
The Times has stated that the new partnership is due to be officially announced by Spain and Portugal football chiefs during a news conference at UEFA’s headquarters on Wednesday. The proposal harnesses the idea that football can restore hope and peace.

Although security assurances would be needed, the expectation is that, by 2030, Russia’s invasion will have been over for some time and the rebuilding of the country will be fully under way.

There remains plenty of competition for the two Iberian nations to host with Morocco and a South American bid from Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, and Chile.

Saudi Arabia, Greece, and Egypt are also contention to host football’s biggest spectacle, with China, Australia, and South Korea expressing separate interest.

Ukraine has hosted a major football tournament when, alongside Poland they hosted the 2012 UEFA European Championship.

However, following Russia’s invasion and the widespread disruption throughout the country, the circumstances would likely be more challenging.

Ukraine can consider themselves unfortunate not to feature at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar next month after narrowly losing out to Wales in a qualifying playoff final in June. Their cause was not helped by their domestic league being suspended, meaning many in their squad lack match fitness.

Ukraine made their World Cup debut in 2006 in Germany, where they were eliminated out in the quarterfinals by the eventual winners Italy.

Ukraine would likely qualify automatically in 2030 if plans to join Spain and Portugal’s campaign are accepted and the nations win their hosting bid.

The winner of the 2030 World Cup bidding process will be announced at the FIFA Congress in 2024.
