UK announces new package of sanctions against Moscow

The British government announced a new package of sanctions on Monday. The sanctions are linked to what London described as Moscow’s “sham” referendums on four regions of eastern Ukraine joining Russia.

Among those sanctioned are top Russian officials involved in enforcing the votes.

“Sham referendums held at the barrel of a gun cannot be free or fair and we will never recognise their results,” British foreign secretary James Cleverly declared in a statement.

“Today’s sanctions will target those behind these sham votes, as well as the individuals that continue to prop up the Russian regime’s war of aggression,” he added.

The UK said those sanctioned include 55 board members as well as directors from organisations which “continue to bankroll the Russian war machine”.

Sham referendums

On September 23, referendums began in the Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine. Moscow is expected to utilise them to justify the annexation of four regions.

The referendums have been denounced by many world leaders including US President Joe Biden, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as well as NATO, the European Union and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
