Help Without Borders: 26.05: Rebuilding Ukraine

Watch the latest episode of TVP World’s Help Without Borders – a show dedicated to the refugees from Ukraine, to learn about their stories, the volunteers, charities, and organisations providing humanitarian assistance.

More than 3.6 million of the total of approximately 6.4 million refugees who have fled Ukraine – have reached the safety of Poland, which has been providing humanitarian help to the arrivals since the very beginning.

This episode of Help Without Borders focuses on Polish bakers who are trying to help rebuild Ukrainian cities destroyed and plundered by the Russians. Moreover, TVP World’s Anna Jabłońska also spoke to some incredible people who decided to support Ukraine’s war efforts by buying combat drones.

Jacek Polewski came from Poland to the city of Bucha devastated by Russian troops and rockets. With the help of the locals, he transformed a destroyed bakery and made it operational.

“As everybody in the world, when I saw photos of Bucha – and they were horrible – the first thought that came to mind is that they need bread. I wanted to help,” Mr Polewski said.

He also stated that currently he and his team are starting a project to build a new bakery. “Within a month I would like to go to Ukraine one more time and visit these places again and bring some much-needed supplies,” the baker stressed.

Donations to the Ukrainian army

The second guest of the episode was Serhiy Prytula, a Ukrainian journalist and army volunteer. He said that he decided to help the Ukrainian military because if he manages to save the life of even one Ukrainian soldier it is worth it.

Mr Prytula stated that two months after the war began he managed to collect UAH 700 mln (EUR 22.17 mln) in military equipment for the Ukrainian army.

He also mentioned his recent collaboration with this year’s Eurovision Song Contest winners the Kalush Orchestra Ukrainian music band. The group started a lottery in which people can donate at least EUR 5 and have the chance to get the iconic pink bucket hat of the band’s frontman, Oleh Psiuk. Moreover, the person who makes the largest donation will get the Eurovision song contest trophy. All the funds will be donated to the Ukrainian army.
