Polish army to receive unmanned Gladius systems

I have approved the contract for the supply of unmanned Gladius systems – this modern equipment will strengthen Poland’s security, informed Poland’s Minister of Defence Mariusz Błaszczak during a press conference on Friday. Under the contract, four battery modules for the Gladius unmanned search and shock systems will be delivered to the Polish army.

“The first drones will be delivered to the artillery regiments stationed in eastern Poland. We are using the experiences and knowledge gained from observing the situation across our eastern border,” said Błaszczak.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the battery modules for the Gladius unmanned search and shock systems would serve for reconnaissance with the use of FT5 unmanned aerial vehicles. The system is based on the drones produced by the Polish company WB Electronics, which can hit targets from the distance of up to 100 kilometres with precision>.

The system based on unmanned search and shock drones was developed in Poland by engineers from WB Group that has many years of experience in building drones for the military. Director of WB Group Piotr Wojciechowski said that thanks to the contract with the Ministry of Defence, the Polish army was being supplied with the most advanced technology. He emphasised that the processes of automatisation of fighting and development of AI were in progress. The Gladius system will answer all those challenges and provide the Polish soldiers a reliable weapon for use in modern conflicts, he said.

The contract will be executed by firms comprising WB Group as well as those from the Polish Armaments Group. The Director of the Armaments Agency, colonel Artur Kuptel, did not wish to disclose any details of the contract. He stressed that the public opinion would be kept up to date with the further stages of the contract.

“Keeping a lot of information secret,” explained Kuptel, “is a deliberate action. As a result, the enemy from the east will lack full information on our armament and the new plans concerning the purchase of military equipment. According to the data revealed by the Armaments Agency, one battery module will consist of launchers, command vehicles, ammunition and maintenance vehicles, and a supply of Gladius unmanned aerial vehicles. The contract provides for a training and logistics package, and is valued at about PLN 2 billion (EUR 425.7 mln).
