Traffic fines double in Poland

In the first quarter of 2022 Polish police imposed slightly more fines than last year, but the amounts increased exponentially, the Rzeczpospolita daily reported on Wednesday.

The newspaper notes that the average fine imposed by the police a year ago amounted to PLN 140 (EUR 30), this year it is much more, at PLN 271 (EUR 59).

“The total amount of fines imposed in this way has doubled, reaching over PLN 335 million [EUR 77 mln],” according to information obtained by the “Rzeczpospolita”.

This is, according to police officers, mainly an effect of new, higher fines for road traffic offences that have been in force since January this year.

The daily states that in the first quarter of this year officers around the country imposed 1.24 million fines – 1,454 more than in the same period last year. The fines were mainly handed out in large city areas. “They were, however, for much larger sums than last year,” the newspaper says.

According to the data published by the newspaper, uniformed officers imposed fines for a total of PLN 46 million (EUR 10 mln) in the Mazowsze region, PLN 42 million (EUR 40 mln) in Silesia and PLN 32 million (EUR 6.9 mln) in Wielkopolska. These regions also have the highest number of fines.
