UPDATE: Multiple people shot, explosives found in New York subway station

Multiple people were shot, many others injured as well as undetonated explosive devices found on Tuesday in a New York City subway station, the New York Fire Department said, according to Reuters.

“This morning, as a Manhattan-bound N train waited to enter the 36th station, an individual on that train donned what appeared to be a gas mask, he then took a canister out of his bag and opened it,” the New York Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell told a press conference.

He added that “the train at that time began to fill with smoke. He then opened fire, striking multiple people on the subway and on the platform.”

The suspect was reported to be a Black male with a heavy build, wearing a green construction-type vest and a hooded sweatshirt, Mr Sewell said. The perpetrator is still at large, while the incident is currently not being investigated as an act of terrorism, the commissioner stressed.

The morining commute shooting

The incident occurred during the morning commute at the 36th Street subway station in the Sunset Park neighbourhood in Brooklyn, according to media reports. US news broadcasters reported that at least five people were shot, citing sources in the New York Fire Department.

It was not immediately clear whether the number of injured people included those who were shot.

Video footage from the scene showed a massive law enforcement presence around the subway station, including heavily armed officers and dozens of police cruisers and emergency vehicles.

A New York City police spokesperson said that officers were responding to the scene but did not have details on the number of individuals shot, Reuters reported.

The New York Police Department warned people to stay away from the affected area, which is known for its thriving Chinatown and the Industry City, a sprawling warehouse district that has become home to many creative businesses.

The New York Police Department will hold a press conference concerning the incident on Tuesday afternoon.
