The Freudian slip of Russia’s Ambassador to the UN

Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya made a spectacle of himself on Tuesday by allowing one Freudian slip to tear down the veil of Moscow’s lies about the Russian-perpetrated massacre of civilians in Kyiv’s suburban town of Bucha.

While attempting to whitewash Russia’s responsibility for the heinous crimes perpetrated on the citizens of the Ukrainian town of Butcha, Russian Ambassador Nebenzya proved surprisingly truthful by saying that “corpses in Boutcha… didn’t exist before the Russian troops arrived”.

My goodness, this must be the mother of all Freudian slips – by the Russian ambassador to the UN just now

UN self-hamstrung again

The Freudian slip was uttered on Tuesday — the same day when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave his VTC speech
before the UN Security, during which he accused Russia of war crimes. President Zelensky’s address was accompanied by a vivid video of charred bodies, severed limbs and mass graves — victims of the Russian aggression.

Having said Russian troops have tortured and killed civilians, burned bodies and raped women in front of their children, President Zelensky challenged diplomats to take bold action or risk compromising the entire UN and the potency international of law.

Looking frazzled, President Zelensky asked the gathering: “Are you ready to close the U.N.? Do you think that the time of international law is gone? If your answer is no, then you need to act immediately.”

The imagery used in the video was congruous with what reporters from various agencies and journalism companies have been reporting from Bucha and other Ukrainian cities that turned into scenes of horror following the Russian military’s withdrawal to eastern Ukraine.

Not only most of the diplomats watched the presentation in horror, but the clip also convinced those displaying staunchly neutral stances, i.e. India, to back the idea of an independent investigation into the alleged atrocities. Here, however, the representatives found their hands tied again due to Russia’s ability to veto any resolutions as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

This is why the neutral members of the Council took no action in response to Zelensky’s proposal to lift Russia’s membership in the UN Human Rights Council.

While on a trip to Brussels for a NATO meeting, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the reports of Russian actions “more than credible,” the brutality “not the random act of a rogue unit” but a “deliberate campaign to kill, to torture, to rape, to commit atrocities.”

“The evidence is there for the world to see,” Mr Blinken said. “This reinforces our determination and the determination of countries around the world to make sure that one way or another, one day or another, there is accountability for those who committed these acts.”
