Ukrainian forces regain control over Kyiv region

Ukraine has regained control of the entire Kyiv region, according to Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malar. The Russians have been trying to capture the Ukrainian capital from the very beginning of the war.

In recent days, Ukrainians have recaptured more than 30 towns and villages around Kyiv, Northern Ukraine. The Russians launched their attack on the Ukrainian capital on the first day of the aggression – February 24, and since then there had been constant fighting around the city.

According to Ukrainian authorities, the recovered towns are mostly destroyed and some of them have been mined.

Anatoly Fedoruk, the mayor of Bucha near Kyiv, which was liberated on Thursday, said that almost 300 people had to be buried in mass graves there. He also added that the city was severely damaged and more bodies are still being found in the streets.

Ukrainian police reported that Bucha is now being cleared, among other things, of explosives.

“The police are doing everything possible to restore order in the liberated territories so that residents can return to their hometown as soon as possible,” the Ukrainian services wrote in a communique. As added, police officers are being assisted by residents who have chosen to remain in the city.

An AFP agency journalist said he saw the bodies of at least 20 men dressed in civilian clothes in Bucha on Saturday. One of them had his hands tied at the back and a Ukrainian passport lying open next to him. According to the journalist, the cause of death could not be immediately determined, but one of the bodies had a large head wound.
