Poland will not pay for Russian gas in roubles

Poland will not give in to Russia’s “blackmail” regarding gas payment rules, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told a press conference in Otwock near Warsaw on Saturday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Thursday, requesting that the countries which Russia sees as “hostile” to its war on Ukraine buy Russian gas for the Russian currency, the rouble, otherwise gas supplies will be cut off. On Friday, Russia’s state gas operator Gazprom notified Polish counterpart PGNiG about changes in gas payment regulations starting from April 1.

Morawiecki stated on Saturday that Poland “will not succumb to this blackmail.” The Prime Minister said that was Putin’s attempt to break EU sanctions.

He appealed to the chancellors of Germany and Austria to resist Russia’s blackmail, stressing that “sanctions must be respected, they must be tight. This system must be tight. We cannot weaken it, it is all critically important.”
