The Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation and the Auschwitz Museum will offer a scholarship programme for Ukrainians with a degree in conservation, the museum announced on Thursday.

Pawel Sawicki, a museum spokesperson said: “In this difficult time when tens and hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian citizens are fleeing to Poland because of Russian aggression, the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation, in cooperation with the Auschwitz Museum, has decided to offer this special assistance measure.”

“The foundation is launching a scholarship programme for people from Ukraine who possess a university degree in the field of conservation of memorial sites and objects,” he added. “It is intended to provide conservators from Ukraine with better job opportunities.”

He pointed out that the project would concern the conservation of historical relics from the Nazi German concentration camps and would be financed by funds earmarked from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation.

“The scholarships will be awarded for a period of six months,” he noted. “The Auschwitz Museum will provide accommodation and introduce the holders of the scholarships to the project.”

More information concerning the scholarships will be published on the museum’s website early next week.

KL Auschwitz was the largest of Nazi German concentration camps and extermination centers. Over 1.1 million men, women and children lost their lives there.
