Poland’s defence minister on Thursday informed about a raised alert for selected army and territorial defence units in connection with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Thursday morning.

“The Polish army has been in a state of more advanced readiness for several weeks now in connection with the tense situation in Ukraine,” reads a statement issued by the Defence Ministry.

“Today, following Russia’s aggression of Ukraine, Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak decided to introduce a raised level of readiness for selected operational army and territorial defence units,” the ministry wrote.

According to the statement, soldiers will not be allowed to leave their units. “The decision to introduce a higher level of readiness is a standard move in such situation,” the ministry added.

The ministry also reported that Blaszczak was in constant contact with his counterparts and army commanders from allied states.

“The Polish armed forces will be responding adequately to the situation,” the ministry concluded.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a special military operation in Ukraine’s Donbass region in the early hours of Thursday morning. In a special televised address on Russian state TV, Putin said Russia has been left with no choice but to defend itself against what he said were threats emanating from modern Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law on the entire territory of Ukraine.
