We will endure, the border will not break: Polish President

“In terms of defending the border, of course we are winning. Thanks to the responsibility and bravery of the Polish Police and Border Guard officers, thanks to the soldiers of the Polish Army, we will endure and will not break,” President Andrzej Duda said in an interview with the weekly “Sieci”.

He added that looking at this situation “even in terms of a migration crisis, at the moment it should be said openly that its scale today is much smaller than in 2015”.

“We all remember the countless crowds, hundreds of thousands of migrants who moved across Europe. We were asked to accept migrants under the quota system. Then, in the same way the Hungarians defended their border, we are defending ours,” Poland’s head of state emphasised.

He also said that “today’s practice is the result of planned actions by the authorities of the Belarusian state. Formally, Alyaksandr Lukashenka manages the state and within this state he organises pressure on our border, deliberately moving migrants to it. And this is something unthinkable,” President Duda stressed.

He assessed that Belarus’ actions are causing the deterioration of relations between Belarus and the EU. “Please remember where today’s situation stems from. First, Minsk forced the landing of the Ryanair plane in Belarus and arrested the oppositionists who were aboard. Then the EU applied sanctions against Belarusian airlines and Belarus. Lukashenka decided to respond and organised the transfer of people, first to Lithuania, and now to the section of the EU border guarded by Poland. So Belarus is attacking the European Union,” the Polish President stated.

Concluding his interview, Poland’s head of state said that there are many reasons why the Minsk regime chose to attack Poland. However, the most important thing is that Poland will continue to defend its borders, the borders of the EU and the Schengen Area.
