“Zawisza Czarny” sailing ship celebrates its 60th anniversary

The “Zawisza Czarny” schooner will be presented on Saturday, at the 5th St. John’s Sailing Parade on its 60th flag raising anniversary. It has recently undergone a major renovation, costing over PLN 1 million. Until the parade the ship is open for tourist visits.

“As the twig is bent, so grows the tree, and if you like it, it will stay in your head, and the temptation to experience a sailing adventure yourself will become irresistible. If you want to take your first steps in sailing, it should be on “Zawisza Czarny”,” captain Wojciech Madej emphasised. He took command of the ship a few weeks ago.

Zawisza Czarny is the oldest scout sailing ship in the world. This week it was moored in the same place, where the ORP “Błyskawica” ship is usually stationed and in good company, near the “Dar Pomorza”, another sailing ship. 60 years ago, the flag was raised on the “Zawisza Czarny” and, as a training ship for the Polish Scouting Association, it entered into sea service.

The schooner serves not only scouts, everybody can visit “Zawisza Czarny” to learn from the crew how to navigate the ship or what the individual nodes are for.

“Zawisza Czarny” will sail during the 5th St. John’s Sailing Parade. On Saturday at noon, about a hundred vessels will arrive in the Gdańsk Bay to sail from Gdynia to Gdańsk.
