Poland sends modular houses to help refugees in Cyprus

Poland will send 80 modular houses, providing shelter for 240 people, to a new refugee centre in Limnes, Cyprus.

Poland’s aid to Cyprus comes in response to a request from Nicos Nouris, the Cypriot interior minister.

“The migration situation in Cyprus has deteriorated significantly over the last three years. Today, we are responding to the appeal of the local government,” Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk, Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister, stressed in a Foreign Affairs Ministry’s statement.

“Cyprus needs support in the expansion of temporary housing infrastructure for newly arrived refugees. Thanks to a grant from the Chancellery of the Prime Minister and the initiative of the Polish Centre for International Aid (PCPM), 80 modular houses will be delivered to Cyprus,” the Ministry announced.

Mr Szynkowski vel Sęk added that “the handover of modular houses is both a gesture of solidarity with our partner in the European Union and the refugee community in Cyprus, and a contribution to building an effective, humane and safe European migration policy.”

The number of asylum seekers and refugee applications in 2020 rose to around 14,000 in Cyprus, accounting for around 4 percent of the small country’s population. The majority of asylum seekers are Syrians fleeing the conflict, as well as migrants from India, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Nigeria and other countries.
