Internet comes to aid of hero who saved woman’s life before being struck down by rare disease

A man who saved the life of a female driver after her car ploughed into a lake has now been helped fight for his own survival after being struck down by a rare disease.

Smashing into a roadside barrier, the little brownish-yellow Hyundai then careered into the lake and began to sink.

Without thinking, the 32-year-old hero leapt out of his car and plunged into the water where, after forcing open the driver’s door, he managed to pull the woman to safety.

Now the Skąpe hero has been diagnosed with Buerger’s disease, a rare disease of veins and arteries.

Also known as thromboangiitis obliterans, the disease is characterized as a chronic progressive inflammation that leads to clotting of small and medium sized arteries and veins in both the hands and feet.

Posting on fundraising page zrzutka.pl, his family said: “The disease has attacked the left leg, which is slowly beginning to die. The hospital underwent a revascularization procedure, which unfortunately was unsuccessful – he is facing amputation.

“We have found a chance to save the leg, but the healing path is expensive and time-consuming. It is necessary to undergo treatments at least three times a week: ozonation, hirudotherapy, it is necessary to cleanse the body and have a specialized diet.”

After hearing of Wesołowski’s plight, internet users were quick to respond, raising over 14,000 zł of the 12,000 being asked for.

A police spokesman said: “The measure of our humanity is what we are to others. Therefore, a man who, not looking at his own safety, without proper equipment or preparation, went to the rescue of another person can only be described by one name – Hero!”
