Polish, Estonian presidents discuss energy, military security

On Tuesday morning the Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid was received by Poland’s head of the state Andrzej Duda. Both leaders met with media representatives after the conversation.

The main topics of the Tuesday talks in Warsaw were military and economic security in the region, the issue of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, energy transformation and renewable sources, the construction of connections in the Central-Eastern Europe and innovations. The crisis in Ukraine was also discussed.


President Duda emphasised that during the conversation with Ms Kaljulaid he also spoke about the “very difficult situation of Poles in Belarus, about the persecution taking place there, the arrests of Polish activists who are Belarusian citizens”.


The Polish president stressed that Poland is currently looking for a solution to this situation, the release of those arrested and “so that fundamental human rights are respected in the future.”



He recalled that Poland and Estonia agreed on the construction of wind farms in the Baltic Sea. The president underlined the importance of cooperation within the framework of the Three Seas Initiative in exchanging experiences from the digital transformation in which Estonia is leading; he was convinced of the great importance of regional cooperation within the EU.


The President of Estonia emphasised that Poland is a strategic ally of her country. “We share a common understanding of regional security, issues related to Russia and transatlantic cooperation. We work together within NATO and the EU,” president Kaljulaid said. She added that Estonia appreciates Poland’s contribution to NATO’s policy in the Baltic region.



The President of Estonia also indicated that her country could cooperate with Poland on issues concerning innovation, new technologies and digitisation.
