World’s oldest Righteous Among the Nations has passed away

At the age of almost 102 years, Anna Koźmińska, the oldest person in the world honoured with the title of Righteous Among the Nations, has passed away.

Ms Koźmińska passed away on March 24, on the National Day of Remembrance of Poles Rescuing Jews under German Occupation, the Polish Righteous portal reported. “She will remain in our memory as a noble, brave, extremely modest and kind person,” the portal wrote.

The portal recalled that during the German occupation, Anna Koźmińska, called Hanka, together with her stepmother, Maria Koźmińska, helped eight-year-old Abraham Jabłoński, who had escaped from the Częstochowa ghetto. He stayed with the Koźmiński family until January 1945.

Kozminska’s story remained unknown for decades until 47 years later when Jabłoński found Anna Koźmińska in Warsaw and asked her to write her memoirs from that time, which she did. Upon Abraham Jabłoński’s motion, Maria and Anna Koźmiński were honoured with the title of Righteous Among the Nations in 1991 by the Yad Vashem Institute.

In 2016, Anna Koźmińska also received the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta awarded by the president. In 2020 President Andrzej Duda honoured Anna Koźmińska with the Centenary of Regained Independence Medal for saving Jews during World War II.

The farewell to Anna Koźmińska will be held at the Church of Saint Charles Borromeo in Warsaw, on March 30 at 2 p.m. and Anna Koźmińska will be buried in the family grave at the Powązki Cemetery.
