Prosecutor’s office to investigate ‘Stobnica Castle’

According to the officers of the Central Anticorruption Bureau (CBA), the money from which the construction of the castle in Stobnica, western Poland, is financed may come from crimes. So far, six people have been indicted, including the castle’s architect and two builders.

The public prosecutor’s office is currently examining the files provided by the CBA. The services want to explain where the money for such a large investment came from. As it was established, some of it went to the Cypriot company of Paweł N. (full name withheld under the Polish law), who was one of the owners of the castle under construction. Later, the money was transferred to the account of the DJT company, which is responsible for its construction.

So far, six people have been indicted: two builders of the castle, its architect, and three employees of the County Office in Oborniki, western Poland, which gave the building permission. The officials were charged with failing to fulfill their duties.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the former head of the company building the castle made a false statement that the plot was intended for construction purposes.

“On the basis of already established facts, the CBA decided to submit some of the material to the prosecutor’s office, which may possibly initiate an investigation and take further steps,” Stanisław Żaryn, the spokesperson of the Minister-Special Services Coordinator said.

The former provincial governor of Wielkopolskie province, Łukasz Mikołajczyk, stated that although the building permit was issued illegally, the castle is at a too advanced stage of construction to withdraw the permit, which could result in an order to demolish the castle.

Further decisions on this matter are to be taken in March.

The monumental 15-storey structure is situated on a partially man-made island on Lake Stobnica in the Notecka Forest. The history of its construction dates back to 2009, when the first applications for changing the spatial development plan were made.

Initially, multi-apartment buildings were to be built there, but the developer announced it would serve as a luxury residential complex with around 50 opulent apartments in total.

The castle became the subject of intense public scrutiny after it was discovered that the structure is being built in a nature reserve.
