NS2 completion would lead to escalation of conflict: Ukrainian deputy PM

The completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline would pave the way for a wider Russian intervention in the territory of Ukraine and the escalation of the conflict on an unimaginable scale, said Olga Stefanishyna, the Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister at the discussion panel of the Washington Atlantic Council think tank, which was devoted to Nord Stream 2.

Ukraine’s deputy prime minister stated that one of the key strategic goals of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was to “undermine the energy security” of her country.

Manuel Sarrazin, an MP of the German Greens, who participated in the panel, expressed the conviction that Nord Stream 2 is “the Kremlin’s geostrategic project aimed at bypassing Ukraine”, which he stated will negatively affect the economy of this country.

In addition, he argued, while pointing to the criticism of the gas pipeline in Central Europe, Nord Stream 2 “divides Europe”. The representative of the Greens also emphasized that the completion of the project will have a negative impact on the climate.

Nord Stream 2 has been controversial in Europe for years. Proponents of the pipeline argue that it is a commercial project, while critics point to its geopolitical dimension and the fact that it can serve as a tool for the Kremlin to increase their influence on Europe.

The gas pipeline, which is opposed by the US, Poland, the Baltic States and other countries, is also criticised in Germany itself.
