Polish, Ukrainian FMs call to stop Nord Stream 2 construction

The Polish and Ukrainian Foreign Ministers Zbigniew Rau and Dmytro Kuleba called in a joint article in “Politico” to stop the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. They emphasised that the US could play an important role in blocking the project.

In the article “Nord Stream 2 has damaged the West enough. Time to put an end to it.” foreign ministers stressed that Poland and Ukraine have a common interest in a strong and resilient West. They also reiterated that Russia has for years been trying to disrupt the process of integration of Central European countries with the West by making them dependent on its natural resources, mainly natural gas.

“Nord Stream was designed to sabotage Europe’s energy security. A decade after launching Nord Stream 1, Russia is dangerously close to completing the twin pipeline, Nord Stream 2. Regrettably, Russia was allowed to advance this far with the project even as it continues to violate Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, showing blatant disregard for international law,” the Ministers emphasised.

“Our calls for vigilance and boldness were heard in the US Congress, which pressed on with measures designed to stop this dangerous, divisive project. We call on US President Joe Biden to use all means at his disposal to prevent the project from completion,” they wrote.

“A lot is at stake, but the way forward is still in our hands. Autocratic rulers in the Kremlin and elsewhere can and should be held accountable. The West, led by the United States, cannot afford to cower in the face of blackmail that runs counter to everything that we stand for,” the diplomats concluded.
