EC condemns Minsk court verdict in Belsat journalists case

This is a continuation of the disgraceful and brutal repression of the Belarusian authorities against Belarusian citizens, Peter Stano, the spokesman for the European Commission said, referring to the verdict of the Minsk court, sentencing the journalists of Belsat, Yekaterina Andreeva and Darya Chultsova, to two years’ imprisonment “for organising public events aimed at disrupting civil order.”

“We are following the case very closely. This verdict shows the continuation of the shameful and brutal repression of the Belarusian authorities against the citizens, against human rights defenders, activists and civil society, and against journalists. These actions are unacceptable,” he said.

Mr Stano added that the EC has called on the Belarusian authorities to respect the freedom of expression and assembly of citizens.

“We see that the campaign of intimidation is escalating,” he said, pointing to the groups that are subject to these repressions: activists and representatives of civil society, human rights defenders, trade union representatives and journalists.

On November 15, a 28-year-old Andreeva and a 24-year-old Chultsova were arrested while broadcasting an online report on the brutal dispersal by OMON [Belarusian special police unit] of the spontaneous commemoration of Roman Bondarenko, beaten to death by “unknown perpetrators.’”

The women were first sentenced to 7 days of detention for participating in an illegal protest and then charged under Part 1 of Article 342 of the Belarusian Criminal Code, concerning the organisation of actions violating public order.

Belsat television channel is a subsidiary of Poland’s public broadcaster Telewizja Polska S.A. (TVP). It was formed in 2007 by a group of Belarusian and Polish journalists as part of TVP in partnership with Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
