Poland selected for new plant site to produce the Volkswagen Crafter

The Crafter was manufactured between 2006 and 2016 at home in Germany, but as times change the light commercial vehicle is going to change homes soon – with VW opening a new assembly facility in Wrzesnia, Poland, as In Auto News reported.

The construction started just two years ago and the cost reached approximately 800 million euros, but now the new factory it has in Poland is the “most advanced new factory of its kind” in Europe. The workforce numbers 3,000 persons – with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles aiming to complete up to 100,000 Crafters per year once it reaches full assembly force. Covering 220 hectares (2.2 square kilometers), the plant will operate in three shifts, with 69 configurations of the 2017 Volkswagen Crafter coming out of Wrzesnia, with cargo volumes of up to 18.4 cubic meters and a gross weight of up to 5.5 tons. The “International Van of the Year 2017,” the Volkswagen Crafter is no longer based on the Mercedes Sprinter, as the model introduced at the IAA is using a completely new architecture that can deliver front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive applications.

It appears the modern design is also helping it achieve the best drag coefficient in its segment (Cd 0.33), with a Euro 6-compliant 2.0 TDI produced in Nutzfahrzeuge specification sitting under the hood. The most affordable version can be had with the 102 PS configuration, while the most powerful application has 175 horsepower – with the Crafter also available in 4 base models, 3 lengths, and 3 height dimensions.
