Online hate speech hurts, Polish researcher warns

One in three teenagers has encountered hate speech on the internet and almost one in ten has been on the receiving end personally, according to a study.

Prof. Jacek Pyżalski from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, western Poland, said research suggests that verbal aggression online is not a universal phenomenon, but painful for those who experience it.

Over 40 percent of teenagers have never or almost never received advice from their parents about how to use the internet safely, Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

More than 60 percent have never or almost never received help from a teacher after encountering disturbing content online, the agency added, citing a study called EU Kids Online.
