Poland to Send 60 Troops to Middle East on Training Mission

Antoni Macierewicz

Poland’s defense minister says that his nation will send 60 troops on a training mission to the Middle East and a frigate to the Aegean Sea to help NATO control and seal off migrant routes into Europe.

Antoni Macierewicz said Monday the mission is necessary to guarantee Poland’s security. Last week he announced that Poland would deploy four F-16 jet fighters on a reconnaissance mission to the Middle East.

Opposition parties have criticized the government and President Andrzej Duda for the decision, announced ahead of a NATO summit in Poland next month. In his campaign last year, Duda was against sending Polish troops to conflict zones.

Macierewicz stressed the mission was not a combat one. He would not say when or where the deployment will take place.
