Early elections for the mayor of the northern Polish city of Gdańsk are taking place on Sunday.
The ballot is held after former city mayor Paweł Adamowicz died in January from wounds inflicted by a knifeman during a high-profile annual fundraiser called the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. He died in hospital a day after the attack.
Three candidates are running for the post of the city’s top representative: Gdańsk acting mayor Aleksandra Dulkiewicz from the Everything for Gdańsk committee, filmmaker Grzegorz Braun and Marek Skiba from the Responsible-Gdańsk committee.
An election silence was introduced at midnight on Saturday.
In the event of the second round of the ballot, the runoff will be held in two weeks.
