No threat to Polish citizens after explosion on Tuesday says president

"The tragic event that took place yesterday has not been repeated in any way," Duda said. "Neither do we have any signals about the risk of such an event being repeated."

The explosion of a Soviet-made missile that killed two Polish citizens near the border with Ukraine was an isolated incident and there is no immediate threat to Polish citizens, Andrzej Duda, Poland’s president, has said.

The president made the statement on Wednesday, after a meeting of the National Security Council (RBN), a body composed of the president, top government and security officials, and party leaders. RBN is convened by the president when key national security issues need to be discussed.

“The tragic event that took place yesterday has not been repeated in any way,” Duda said. “Neither do we have any signals about the risk of such an event being repeated.”

Earlier in the day, the president said that the missile that hit a grain-drying facility in the village of Przewodow near Poland’s border with Ukraine on Tuesday, killing two people, was likely a stray Soviet-era Ukrainian air defence rocket as Ukrainian forces were trying to defend their cities and infrastructure against a barrage of Russian missile strikes.

“At the moment there is no risk to Poland or our citizens that is clear to us or which we are immediately aware of,” Duda said.

Duda said the government has “increased the operation of non-military services as well as selected military units and the Air Force.”

Commenting on the three-our BBN meeting, Duda said the discussion was “open, honest and responsible” on the part of all sides taking part in the meeting, regardless of political divisions
