Air defence cannot defend whole country, general command says

No state has air defences capable of protecting all its territory, the General Command of the Polish Armed Forces said on Wednesday.

Air defences are designed to protect critical infrastructure, it added in a statement released in reaction to the news that a missile had struck eastern Poland killing two people.

“No army possesses an air defence system capable of protecting a country’s entire territory. Missile attacks (are directed – PAP) at chosen targets, they do not destroy multiple targets over extended territory. The task of such systems is to protect critical infrastructure,” the General Command wrote on Twitter.

Just who fired the missile, which has been described as Russian-made, remains unclear.
