PM calls urgent meeting of gov’t national defence committee

Mateusz Morawiecki, the Polish prime minister, has called an urgent meeting of the Government Committee for National Defence and Defence Affairs, the government spokesman has said.

Piotr Mueller made the announcement on Twitter on Tuesday evening.

The Government Committee for National Defence and Defence Affairs was established in late 2020 after a government reshuffle. It was first led by ruling Law and Justice leader and the then deputy prime minister Jarosław Kaczyński.

Since Kaczynski’s resignation from the government, the committee has been led by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak.

It is composed of the ministers of justice, internal affairs and foreign affairs as well as the special services coordinator.

Later in the evening, Mueller said that, “in connection with the existing crisis situation, the prime minister and President Andrzej Duda have called a meeting at the National Security Bureau (BBN) with members of the Government Committee for National Defence and Defence Affairs.”

Mueller has also called on mass media to “not publish unverified information.”

“Any information, which will be presented during today’s meeting, will be presented later, if possible, to the public,” Mueller told reporters.
