Chinese-Japanese relations will not improve in near future: expert

At an annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and its partners, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida criticised Beijing for stepping up actions that infringe on Japan’s sovereignty in the East China Sea.

“They do not look good,” Maciej Gaca, a sinologist from the Nicolaus Copernicus University, said, commenting on the current relations between the two countries, adding that he did not expect them to be improved in the near future, even in areas where interests of both the parties would align.

As the expert emphasised, as much as 81 percent of Japan’s residents perceive China as a security threat.
