Spokesman of the Office for Foreigners (UdSC) Jakub Dudziak said on Thursday that by the end of September almost 1.4 million Ukrainians have obtained PESEL (Personal ID) numbers in Poland.

According to the UdSC, this was achieved under the law on assistance to Ukrainian citizens in connection with the armed conflict in the territory of that country. The act provides for assigning a PESEL number to Ukrainian citizens, their spouses and immediate family members if they hold a Polish Charter card (a document confirming Polish heritage).

“These people can benefit from temporary protection in line with the EU Council decision establishing the existence of a mass influx of displaced persons from Ukraine,” said Jakub Dudziak.

In addition, the UdSC issued 1,200 permissions for the use of temporary protection for persons who are not subject to the so-called Aid Act, and belong to the category of displaced persons mentioned in the EU Council decision. Most of the permissions were issued to citizens of Russia (400) and Belarus (200).
