Germany to deliver 18 self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine. In 30 months

After two months of deliberations, the German federal government approved the delivery of 18 RCH-155 self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine, the German news website “Welt” reported. However, the RCH-155 would be delivered in 30 months at the earliest.

Welt stated that Ukraine sent a request to Germany for 18 units of the RCH-155 weapons system, produced by the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) armaments group, in mid-July 2022. 18 RCH-155 howitzers are valued at EUR 216 million.

According to Ukrainian sources, KMW only wanted to start production when there was a clear signal from the federal government that the weapons could be exported to Ukraine. That is why the RCH-155 would be delivered no sooner than 30 months.

Still, Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk welcomed the move and hoped that the federal government “also makes further commitments” as part of an existing KMW offer of a total of 100 self-propelled howitzers.

The RCH-155 has a barrel of a Panzerhaubitze 2000 (PzH 2000) mounted on the base of a Boxer, an eight-wheeled military vehicle. The ammunition also corresponds to that of the PzH 2000. Germany has already delivered ten units of this self-propelled howitzer to Ukraine.

So far, Germany has delivered 10 self-propelled Panzerhaubitze 2000 howitzers and three Mars II artillery rocket systems.

Germany’s tardiness

Earlier on September 10, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba accused Germany of ignoring Kyiv’s pleas for Leopard tanks and Marder infantry fighting vehicles, saying Berlin offered only “abstract fears and excuses” for not providing such military hardware.

His comment came after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a new appeal to the West to speed up deliveries of weapons systems as Ukrainian forces move to consolidate control over a large swathe of northeastern territory recaptured from Russia.

“Not a single rational argument on why these weapons cannot be supplied, only abstract fears and excuses. What is Berlin afraid of that Kyiv is not?,” Minister Kuleba wrote on Twitter.

Disappointing signals from Germany while Ukraine needs Leopards and Marders now — to liberate people and save them from genocide. Not a single rational argument on why these weapons can not be supplied, only abstract fears and excuses. What is Berlin afraid of that Kyiv is not?

During Kuleba’s last visit to Berlin German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock promised further military aid and did not rule out the delivery of Western-style main battle tanks. However, no concrete information has been provided.
