Russians target dam flooding Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih

Russian armed forces hit the city of Kryvyi Rih with eight cruise missiles on Wednesday, severely damaging the Karachunivske reservoir dam located near the city. As a result of the destruction, water from the reservoir ended up flooding Kryvyi Rih.

“The water pumping station was destroyed. The river broke through the dam and overflowed its banks. Residential buildings are just a few meters away from the river,” Ukrainian legislator Inna Sovsun said on Twitter.

Oleksandr Vilkul, the head of the Kryvyi Rih military administration, said in a post on Telegram that 112 homes were flooded and that thankfully works to repair the dam on the Inhulets river were already underway. He also emphasised that the “flooding was receding”.

Russian aggression against civilians

In a video address on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that the water system had “no military value” and that hundreds of thousands of civilians depend on it daily.

“Beaten by the Ukrainian army on the battlefield, Russian cowards are now at war with our critical infrastructure and civilians. Russia is a terrorist state and must be recognised as such,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated on Twitter, referring to Kryvyi Rih.
