Polish PM asks France for arms, more financial support for Ukraine

"I have appealed to President Macron for the most urgent deliveries of armaments to Ukraine and for more financial support as we are aware of the fact that a country, which is in a state of war, must depend on its allies," Morawiecki told reporters.

Mateusz Morawiecki, the Polish prime minister, has asked the French president for the most urgent deliveries of arms to Ukraine and for more financial support for that country.

Morawiecki, who made the statement after a meeting with Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday, said he had presented Poland’s evaluation of the situation in Ukraine to the French president.

“I have appealed to President Macron for the most urgent deliveries of armaments to Ukraine and for more financial support as we are aware of the fact that a country, which is in a state of war, must depend on its allies,” Morawiecki told reporters.

Having pointed out that, in June, the European Council had approved assistance for Ukraine worth EUR 9 billion, Morawiecki said that “Ukraine is still waiting for these funds, for this financial support to come about.”

Referring to the European economy, Morawiecki said that he had earlier suggested a profound reform of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) to both the French president and the EC president. “The current system of the EU emission allowances (EUA) is another burden falling on the already high energy prices,” he said.

“We should take advantage of the fact that this tool, namely the ETS system… is in our European hands, and we should lower prices… both the EU and the EC have appropriate mechanisms to bring down the prices to, for instance, EUR 30,” he said, adding that the current prices stood between EUR 80 and 90, and had been pushing up inflation.

Morawiecki added that the meeting also focused on Polish-French economic cooperation in the nuclear and renewable energy industries.
