German promises of armoured weapons exchange were lies: Dep FM

Polish deputy Foreign Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk said that German promises of armoured weapons exchange were lies. Poland was therefore forced to search for alternative methods of replenishing its stocks of tanks after it has given many of its tanks to Ukraine.

“Germans offered Poland tanks which were much older than the ones we sent to Ukraine. That offer was not acceptable to Poland and we are looking for help from other NATO countries,” Szynkowski vel Sęk said in an interview for the German weekly “Spiegel”.

He added that accepting Germany’s offer would mean deterioration of the armament condition of the Polish Army.

“Our soldiers would have to use equipment from the 60s’. Moreover, Germany offered only a symbolic number of tanks. It was hardly a serious proposal considering the fact that we sent over 200 tanks to Ukraine,” Szynkowski vel Sęk said.

He pointed out that Poland will focus on negotiating with other NATO countries – like the US and Great Britain – which are more interested in providing real support and which already sent their weapons to Poland.

Bundestag, the German Parliament, decided that Germany would support Ukraine with heavy weapons only indirectly. One of the NATO countries was to provide older Soviet-era tanks to the Ukrainian Army while receiving modern tanks from Germany. It was expected to ensure the swift transfer of heavy weapons to Ukraine while keeping the military potential of NATO’s eastern flank states. Despite promises, the process of transferring weapons from Germany has stagnated in the last several weeks.
