Rock Rachon 21.07

In this episode of Rock Rachon, the focus is on “the gas cat-and-mouse game” that Russia plays turning off and on the flow of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline in an apparent attempt to unnerve the European Union.

The show starts off with a recap of the recent turning on of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline that underwent a scheduled annual 10-day maintenance shutdown. This section is followed by a scrutiny of Germany’s energy mix and its share of gas, constituting 26 percent in 2021. More than 55 percent of the gas share originates from Russia, making Germany dependent on Moscow.

This dependence had been noted by former US President Donald Trump who said, while in office, that “Germany will become totally dependent on Russian energy, if it does not immediately change course.”

Presented on the programme, a doctoral thesis authored by Russian leader Vladimir Putin himself states that “gas is [Russia’s] tool of strategic influence”.

As Germany’s Deputy Chancellor Robert Habeck has noted recently “if we had started ten years ago, if we had proceeded for the past ten weeks we could significantly reduce this dependence. But we didn’t. Now we are running out of time to acquire gas and fill up our storage facilities.”

But Germany’s pre-war stance did not show signs of a presage that could extricate the country from Russia’s clutches. As shown in the programme, Germany was building a joint economic and climate agreement with Russia on gas just six months ago.

To discuss this and other matters Rock Rachon was joined by Alexander Lanoszka, a defence analyst, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Waterloo; Ernest Bevin, Associate Fellow of Euro-atlantic Geopolitics at the Council on Geostrategy; Maciej Rusiński, a journalist, economic analyst and Polish Radio’s New York correspondent also associated with Gazeta Polska, as well as Matthew Tyrmand, a Polish-US economist, publicist and social activist.
