Wickremesinghe sworn in as economic tension in Sri Lanka boils

The six-time prime minister Ranil Wirckremesinghe won 134 votes in the 225 member parliament in a vote count on Wednesday (July 20), and was sworn in as the new president of Sri Lanka by the chief justice of the country on Thursday.

The former president of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country and resigned from his post last week after a series of protests blaming the Rajapaksa family and allies for runaway inflation, shortages of basic goods, and corruption. The street protest over the economic meltdown led to unrest and the storming of the residence of the president.

Wickremesinghe, who took over the role, is just as unpopular among some protesters however. They stormed his official residence this month when he was prime minister and burnt down his private house.
