Poles must brace themselves for unprecedented increases of energy prices, the president of the Energy Regulatory Office (URE) has said.

Rafał Gawin warned on Tuesday that Poland may expect “tariff increases that we have never seen.”

“We had a 37-percent correction (increase – PAP) last year and now we’re saying that it may be even bigger,” Gawin said. “The effect may be something unprecedented when it comes to tariff change.”

He went on to say that the government may have to protect the most vulnerable members of society against such increases. “We see rationale in introducing tangible measures, let’s call them shielding measures,” he said.

Non-individual consumers may have “an even bigger problem, as these customers are already paying much more” than regulated consumers, Gawin added.

The official showed little optimism in his prediction of future energy prices. “This means… that next year there will be no reason for a downward correction, or at least there’s nothing to warrant that today,” he said and added: “What is more, there are reasons to say that the market will reach high valuations.”
