The contractors responsible for a fence on Poland’s border with Belarus have said work is going to schedule and should be finished by the end of June, a Border Guard spokesperson has told PAP.

Lieutenant Anna Michalska added that the Border Guard has already received a design for an electronic barrier and will start working on it in June.

“The contractors declare that the physical barrier will be finished in line with the plan, so by the end of June,” she said. “The contract also binds them to that.”

Construction of the physical barrier, to be built along a 187-kilometre stretch of the border, has been ongoing for four months, since its commencement on January 25. The crisis on Polish-Belarussian border started last summer when thousands of migrants, most from the Middle East, attempted to cross the Polish frontier from Belarus and enter the European Union.

Michalska added that almost 100 km of the fence has already been completed. The electronic barrier, comprised of a system of cameras and sensors, will cover the same area as the physical barrier as well as some border waters. Plans for it were delivered to the Border Guard on Monday by the contractor, Elektrotim. Under the contract, the electronic barrier should be delivered within 60 days of the physical barrier being completed.

Poland has blamed the border crisis on Belarus’s Lukashenko government, accusing it of bringing the refugees to Belarus under promises of easy entry into the EU, and then encouraging them to force their way into Poland.
