Mateusz Morawiecki, the Polish prime minister, has told a high-profile international fundraiser for Ukraine in Warsaw that the war-torn country needs around 12 tonnes of humanitarian aid every day.

The event, called the High-Level International Donors’ Conference for Ukraine, was held at the National Stadium in the Polish capital on Thursday.

The conference, co-hosted by Morawiecki and his Swedish counterpart Magdalena Andersson, and joined by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, is seeking donations from countries.

“Your presence here shows that we are not indifferent to the suffering caused by this unfair, brutal war. That we are doing everything in our power to stop Russia and ensure Ukraine’s victory,” Morawiecki said opening the event.

According to the Polish prime minister, at the moment, Ukraine’s aid needs are being met by less than 25 percent. “We need more funds for food and hygiene products,” he said.

Andersson said that Ukraine can count on Sweden’s financial, humanitarian and military aid and declared that her country would allocate EUR 23 billion to support Ukraine. Von der Leyen declared EUR 200 million for internally displaced persons in Ukraine.

Addressing the conference remotely, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the meeting was to show that Ukraine and the whole world are united in a common goal. “Our continent is united, millions of people around the world support us in making tyranny lose,” he added.

Zelensky called on the countries participating in the conference to take patronage over those branches of the Ukrainian economy that suffered from the war. “The aggressor must know that he will not defeat a free Europe; everything that has been destroyed by the war will be rebuilt,” he said.
