The US will aid its European allies in supplying natural gas to Poland and Bulgaria after Russia halted deliveries to both countries, US President Joe Biden announced on Thursday.

Biden said the US will not allow Moscow to intimidate Europe by means of gas, and underlined that neither Poland nor Bulgaria needed to fear a gas shortage.

Biden also said he was urging Congress to raise US aid funding for Ukraine in its defensive war against Russia.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken wrote on Twitter that Gazprom’s (Russian gas company – PAP) one-sided termination of its gas contracts with Poland and Bulgaria proved Russia was using its natural resources as a weapon. Blinken wrote that this made Russia an unreliable supplier.

Also on Thursday, EC deputy head Maros Sefcovic announced a Monday meeting of EU energy ministers to seek ways of ensuring gas supplies to Europe. In this context, he said Poland will play “a major role” in the EU’s plans to diversify gas supply sources.
