Warsaw-Budapest relations ‘should thaw’: poll

More than half of Poles want the country’s relations with Viktor Orban’s government to cool down, while over seven out of 10 respondents expect changes in the relations between Poland and Hungary, a new poll by SW Research shows.

Participants of the survey for the Rzezpospolita daily published on Saturday were asked the question “in connection with Hungary’s attitude towards the war in Ukraine, should Poland cool down its relations with Viktor Orban’s government?”.

Over 57 percent of respondents answered “yes”. A negative answer was given by 13.9 percent of respondents. On the other hand, 28.7 percent of respondents have no opinion on this issue.

Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party has been critical of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his response to the Russian invasion of his country. Mr Orban has kept close relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Ukrainian officials have accused Hungary of “helping Putin” in the war, a day after the country’s leader Viktor Orban said he was prepared to break ranks with the EU and buy Russian gas in roubles.

Thawing relations

“The cooling down of Polish-Hungarian relations is more often considered right by men (61 percent) than women (54 percent),” SW Research wrote in a statement. “The thawing of relations between states is supported by almost two in three respondents (64 percent) aged between 35 and 49 and 61 percent of respondents with higher education.”

The survey was conducted by research agency SW Research among users of its online panel on 5-6 April this year. The analysis covered a group of 800 internet users over the age of 18.
