The Polish government has welcomed a new package of British sanctions on Russia.

Poland has been a leading voice in calling for tougher sanctions, and Piotr Mueller expressed the government’s satisfaction with British plans to impose yet more.

“We are very happy that Great Britain has declared another package of sanctions it can impose as a country which can take such decisions independently,” Piotr Mueller told reporters on Tuesday, adding that this was also important for the UK’s cooperation with the EU and the US.

Mueller made the statement after a meeting between Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Liz Truss, the British foreign secretary, in Warsaw.

“The Polish prime minister and the British foreign secretary also spoke about sanctions regarding gas, crude oil and coal as well as the closure of the global banking system to Russian banks,” Mueller said, adding that this proposal had been strongly supported by Britain.

According to Mueller, another topic of the meeting concerned steps designed to strengthen Ukraine militarily. “The point is to make it possible for Ukrainians to defend themselves against Russia’s barbaric attack,” he said.

According to Mueller, apart from sanctions, the meeting was also focused on assistance for Ukrainian war refugees staying in Poland and in other countries.

“Great Britain has announced further measures, including financial assistance to both EU and non-EU countries accepting war refugees,” he said.
