Polish PM accuses Germany of being responsible for Russia’s strength

Mateusz Morawiecki, the Polish prime minister, has accused Germany of building up Russia’s strength by listening to German businessmen and “billionaires”.

Morawiecki made the accusation as the world reacted to images of dead Ukrainian civilians, apparently murdered by Russian forces in and around the village of Bucha.

“It has been Germany’s policy for the last dozen or so years that led to the fact that Russia today has strength resulting from the monopoly on the sale of raw materials,” Morawiecki said on Monday.

The prime minister said this form of politics should be condemned, and that it should be admitted that it had been inappropriate as “we have been dealing with terrible crimes today.”

“This is the crime of genocide in the 21st Century,” Morawiecki said.

“It is not the voice of German businessmen or of German billionaires, who have surely been trying to prevent more steps being taken, which should be heard in Berlin today,” Morawiecki said.

“It is the voice of all the innocent women and children, the voice of the murdered people who should be heard by the German people, and by all German politicians,” he added, in an apparent appeal to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

He also accused Angela Merkel, Scholz’s predecessor, of being silent despite her apparent role in helping Russia build up its strength.
