Russia blames Ukraine for attack on fuel depot in Belgorod

Kremlin has accused Ukraine of making a strike at a fuel depot in the Russian city of Belgorod, but the Ukrainian side denies the accusations.

Ukraine’s Minister of Defence, Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, refused to either confirm or deny the allegations.

“Ukraine is currently conducting a defensive operation against Russian aggression on the territory of Ukraine, and this does not mean that Ukraine is responsible for every catastrophe on Russia’s territory,” he said.

Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba said that he “can neither confirm nor reject the claim that Ukraine was involved in this simply because I do not possess all the military information.”

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has likewise denied knowledge as to who perpetrated the attack.

According to Russia, a strike on its own territory, which they blame on the Ukrainian side, creates an awkward backdrop for the ongoing negotiations in Istanbul, which are intended to bring an end to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has previously warned that Russia may conduct terrorist attacks on its own territory.

The Russians claim that the attack on the fuel depot was perpetrated by two Ukrainian helicopters, which would make it the first attack of Ukrainians against Russian targets. It should be noted, however, that even if such an airstrike had indeed taken place, both sides of the conflict used much of the same, post-Soviet equipment, so it would not be beyond the scope of imagination, that it might simply be a false flag operation conducted by the Russian air force.

According to Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, authorities were doing everything they could to reorganize the fuel supply chain in the area.
