Ukrainian FM says Poland leads on sanctions on Russia

"Poland is absolutely in the lead when it comes to increasing the economic pressure on Russia, but I see this fatigue, the desire to avoid further, additional systemic sanctions that could hit the Russian economy," Kuleba said.

Ukraine’s foreign minister has said that Poland is at the forefront of EU countries wanting to increase the economic pressure on Russia.

Dmytro Kuleba met in Warsaw on Thursday President Andrzej Duda, Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński, Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak, and on Wednesday he spoke with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

According to Kuleba, the talks included the topic of sanctions.

“We are thinking about what further sanctions should be imposed on Russia, how we can jointly close the gaps in the existing sanctions,” Kuleba told private Polish TV broadcaster TVN24 on Thursday.

Asked if the EU is ready to introduce a ban on Russian oil and gas, Kuleba admitted that he could feel “a certain fatigue” over sanctions in some European countries, but Poland is not one of them.

“Poland is absolutely in the lead when it comes to increasing the economic pressure on Russia, but I see this fatigue, the desire to avoid further, additional systemic sanctions that could hit the Russian economy,” Kuleba said.

The Ukrainian minister also said they had discussed “what can be done to defeat Russia.”

“I was received by all your key members of the government and the president himself, which demonstrates a certain openness and readiness from Poland to continue helping Ukraine,” he added.
